The cork is there because when 3D printing (Stereolithography), the ceramic powder would stay enclosed in between the 2 walls therefore an opening is made to let the powder go once the cup is finished. 

A good thing would be to vacuum pump the air contained in between the walls to increase the thermos effect of the cup.
